How we compared, and what we did not do.

This page compares two ways of buying a digitizing file, not named sellers. Fiverr and Etsy are marketplaces of independent sellers, so price, turnaround, revisions and quality are set by each seller and vary widely. Rating individual sellers would be out of date within weeks and unfair to the good ones.

What we did: we listed the things that decide whether a file works in production, then said plainly which side of each one is fixed and which you have to check with the seller. The PlixaLabs column is our own published terms, which you can check against our price list and trade terms.

What we did not do: we did not place test orders, sew anyone's files or compare stitch quality, and we make no claim about the quality of any seller's work. The only reliable test is a sew-out on your own machine with your own fabric. We also did not quote marketplace fees or policies, because those change and each platform publishes its own current terms.

When a marketplace is a good choice.

  • It's a one-off personal project, not a customer order.
  • You can test-sew the file yourself before it matters.
  • The seller has plenty of reviews for the same kind of design, such as caps or small text.
  • You don't need a business invoice or vendor paperwork.
  • Budget matters more than turnaround or consistency.

When a studio is the better choice.

  • You're digitizing customer logos for paid orders.
  • You send work regularly and need the same standard every time.
  • The job is a cap, 3D puff, jacket back or small lettering.
  • Your accounts team needs a W-9 or net terms.
  • You need a predictable turnaround and a team that fixes the file if it doesn't sew right.

Check that the format your machine needs (DST, PES, JEF, EXP…) is in the package price.

Check the revision limit

How many revisions are included, and for how long after delivery.

Ask how the file is made

Hand-digitized or auto-digitized? Auto-conversion often struggles with small text and fine detail.

It can be. Some sellers are skilled and many are low-cost. Quality varies, so check sew-out photos, reviews for similar designs and what each package includes before you order.
