How to estimate a stitch count (step by step)
- Choose your units. Pick inches, centimeters or millimeters.
- Enter the finished size. Type the embroidered width and height, not the size of the image file.
- Pick the complexity. Simple (text, basic logos, 1–3 colors), Medium (detailed logos with fills, 4–8 colors) or Complex (fine detail, shading, 8+ colors).
- Pick the fabric. Standard garments, caps, towels or thin fabrics each change the stitch density.
- Add options. Select 3D puff, patch, appliqué, jacket back or rush if they apply.
- Calculate and read the results. You get an indicative stitch count and range, machine run time, likely thread colors and the flat price for the matching tier.
How the estimate is calculated
A logo never fills its whole bounding box, so the calculator first works out how much of the box is likely to be stitched, then multiplies that area by a typical stitch density for the complexity you chose:
Stitches = width × height (cm²) × coverage × stitches per cm² × fabric adjustment × option adjustment

Fabric adjustments: caps +15%, towels and terry +25%, thin fabrics −15%. Options: 3D puff −25%, patches +20%, appliqué −40% (fabric replaces large fills). These are the calculator's planning factors, not fixed rules: a digitizer chooses stitch types, underlay and density for each shape, so a real file can differ noticeably.
How many stitches is a logo?
It depends on the finished size and how much of the design is filled. As a worked example, here is what this calculator returns for a 4 × 3 inch (10.2 × 7.6 cm) left chest logo on a standard garment. These are the model's outputs, not measurements of real files.
